Labour’s letter in full:
Re: Defending our community against Berkeley’s Aylesham Centre appeal
Dear Cllrs McAsh and Chamberlain,
We are writing to seek confirmation that the Green-Lib Dem coalition will fight against Berkeley Homes’ appeal on the Aylesham Centre development in Peckham.
Whilst running the council, Southwark Labour put in significant energy to secure a proposal for the Aylesham Centre that benefitted the Peckham community and built much-needed social and genuinely affordable homes.
Berkeley Homes’ decision to drop their original plans for 35% affordable and down to just 12% was an insult to our residents. We fought hard with our community against that proposal and welcomed the planning inspector’s decision to reject Berkeley Homes’ original appeal.
At a community meeting in Rye Lane last week, we were informed that administration would remain an interested party and defend the appeal decision. We would therefore like it on record that the council will follow our lead by fighting against this appeal and supporting our residents.
If the council is not to fight the appeal we would like the rationale to be laid out in writing.
Kind regards,
Cllr Sarah King
