Local Labour candidates in Elephant & Castle have launched a petition demanding funding to upgrade the “Piccadilly Circus of the South”.
Investment in Elephant & Castle Railway Station is needed to make it safe, accessible, and fit for the future.
The petition, launched by Labour candidates in North Walworth ward, can be found at this link here.
Labour aims to deliver step-free access, increase capacity, and support the area’s rapid growth – benefiting residents, commuters, students, and local businesses alike. Work would also provide a link to the overground from the recently unveiled town square.
One of the busiest transport hubs in the country, Elephant & Castle is set to see even more footfall soon, with a new shopping centre and university buildings opening later this year.
Labour-run Southwark has already invested £350,000 in design plans for the project, funded by Southwark Labour’s tax on big developers.
North Walworth’s Labour candidates are now calling on Network Rail to match that ambition and deliver the investment needed to transform the station.
Calling for investment from Network Rail, local Labour candidate Saba Manzoor said:
“We are launching this petition because we’ve heard firsthand from residents about the daily barriers they face at our station. A full upgrade is essential to deliver step-free access, improve safety, and unlock the regeneration Elephant & Castle deserves. As your local candidates, we are here to amplify your voices and press Network Rail to match Labour’s local investment in a station fit for the future.”
Local Labour candidate Zaid Moosa said:
“As a recent father, I’ve come face to face with the accessibility restrictions at our main station. Both the Bakerloo Line and network rail station are off limits if either my wife or I are travelling alone. This is unacceptable in central London in 2026 and I’m glad that with Labour in local and national government, we’ve got the chance to put this right. Please add your voice to our campaign to help make this happen!”
