Southwark Labour has today set out five promises to create a borough where everyone can succeed.
Southwark residents have told us that the most important issues for them are help with the cost of living crisis, build genuinely affordable homes and tackle anti-social behaviour and crime.
Southwark Labour has listened to residents and have a plan to:
- Building genuinely affordable homes
- with 1,500 new social rent homes, one third of which will be council-owned.
- Keeping neighbourhoods safe
- by doubling the number of community wardens, meaning tougher enforcement on streets and estates, night and day.
- A new youth guarantee
- with opportunities for all young people leaving school while helping residents find a good, well-paid job.
- A free culture pass
- breaking down barriers so everyone can enjoy our amazing, diverse nightlife, art, theatre and all the borough has to offer.
- A council you can trust
- to cherish the things you love most about Southwark, like our parks and libraries, to take your issues seriously and to get it right first time, whether it’s housing repairs or fly-tipping.
At a launch event in Peckham, Councillor Sarah King, Leader of Southwark Labour, said:
“Labour’s vision is to create a borough where everyone can succeed in life. This means continuing our record of building genuinely affordable homes for residents, keeping our local communities safe, and supporting every young person to get into a job, education or training when leaving school.”
Sarah continued: “Southwark has amazing cultural heritage from the Globe Theatre on the Thames, the nightlife of Rye Lane, the South London Gallery and Burgess Park. We want to break down barriers and let everyone enjoy all our borough has to offer.
But this must go hand in hand with being a council all our residents can trust. Getting things right first time will be our driving mission. And I won’t be satisfied until I deliver that.”
